Writing is an important mode of communication. Writing helps you convey your opinions and message to others. Any mistakes in grammar, spelling, or punctuation can change the meaning of the sentence you’re writing. In this blog, let us take a look at the top Punctuations Rules for grammar that you should know before your next IELTS exam, and get rid of some misnomers surrounding it.
1. Comma
Commas bring a pause in the whole sentence. It’s crucial to use it in the right manner so you can convey the message appropriately. Let’s understand this by an example:
“Elena Williams finds her happiness in cooking, her family, and traveling.”
2. Colon
A colon is used to draw the attention of the reader to what is to follow, such as an explanation or a list.
For example – You may be required to pack many things when traveling:
a) Chargers and USB cables,
b) Proper clothing,
c) Shoes,
And more.
3. Semicolon
A semicolon is used to join two or more ideas in a sentence. You should use semicolons when a sentence is complete, yet needs extra information in it.
For example – I have an IELTS test tomorrow; I can’t go out tonight.
4. Apostrophes
Symbolized with (‘), the apostrophe is used in the following situations:
a) To show ownership or possession.
b) Contractions; whenever you want to eliminate a letter from informal written English, just replace it with the Apostrophe.
For examples,
1) Isn’t it very warm today?
2) I am wearing my sister’s watch.
5. A question mark
A question mark is symbolized by (?). It is used to ask a question. In other words, it is used at the end of interrogative sentences.
For examples,
What is your name?
What will you have today?
6. Exclamation Mark
The exclamation mark is symbolized by (!). Any expression of emotion is followed by an exclamation mark.
For example,
Wow! We won the match!
7. Quotation Mark
The quotation mark is symbolized by (“”) and is used in the following two contexts:
- Quoting someone’s speech as it is
- Referring to a title
For example,
Please watch the movie “Forrest Gump”; it is amazing.
